NUP Launches Shs9 Billion Fundraising Drive Ahead of 2026 Elections
July 8, 2025 — The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s leading opposition party, has officially launched a nationwide fundraising campaign targeting Shs9 billion (approx. US$2.4 million) in preparation for the 2026 general elections
Why the Fundraising Drive Matters
At the launch held at party headquarters in Makerere‑Kavule, Kampala, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya outlined how the funds will be used:
- Produce 100,000 T-shirts (estimated Shs1.5 billion)
- Support nomination fees for aspiring candidates (Shs1.4 billion)
- Fund activities on polling day and logistics (Shs1.2 billion)
- Cover costs for banners, posters, flyers, transportation, and media outreach
Inclusive & Transparent Mobilization - Party treasurer Benjamin Katana emphasized that the drive is open to all Ugandans, regardless of donation amount. Contributors receive receipts, and donations are categorized into tiers from "star one" (Shs100,000–900,000) to "star five" (Shs10 million and above)
Leader's Support
Robert Kyagulanyi (“Bobi Wine”), NUP’s president, inaugurated the drive with a Shs10 million contribution and urged supporters—both at home and abroad—to join the cause. He criticized recent laws aimed at blocking opposition party funding, affirming that NUP will rely on people-driven financing instead
A Ground-Level Push: Mukono Fundraising Spotlight
In Mukono Municipality, party officials launched a grassroots drive that aims to raise Shs20 million within a week. Local coordinators expressed optimism over community participation and the potential impact of local-level fundraising efforts
